Assistant Professor - Biological Anthropology, Lehman College

The Department of Anthropology of Lehman College, CUNY invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty member at the Assistant Professor rank, with a start date of August 2026. We seek outstanding scientists with a strong publication record, and significant research experience in the field of biological anthropology. Responsibilities include research, teaching, mentoring, and service. The candidate is expected to generate an active, externally funded research program, and to participate in undergraduate and graduate teaching and research training. Annual teaching is 18 contact hours in introductory Biological Anthropology, Human Variation, and advanced courses areas of specialist interest, with contractually mandated release time included as part of all tenure-track hires.

We seek applications from collaborative individuals with research interests in areas of biological anthropology that are synergistic with ongoing research at Lehman, CUNY, The New York Consortium in Evolutionary Anthropology (NYCEP), the American Museum of Natural History, and the Wildlife Conservation Society (including the Bronx Zoo). We particularly encourage scholars focusing on the following areas of research: the archaeology of human evolution, human and non-human primate paleobiology, primatology (including primate conservation biology), or human biology.

QUALIFICATIONS

Ph.D. degree in Biological Anthropology or related field. Candidates must demonstrate effectiveness in teaching and communication, scholarly achievement, and collaborative potential. Preferred qualifications include a strong publication and funding record, innovative research, and a commitment to mentoring students at the undergraduate and graduate level. It is expected that the successful applicant will be involved in research mentoring of undergraduates at Lehman College. In addition, individuals to be considered for this position are expected to join the Doctoral faculty of the CUNY Graduate Center and the New York Consortium in Evolutionary Primatology (NYCEP), and engage in graduate teaching opportunities and the mentorship of PhD students.

COMPENSATION

$109,025 for a 9-month, full-time appointment.

Faculty may be eligible for summer salary as additional compensation, and support for conference travel. UMN search for a Biological Anthropologist in 2025-2026

About the Position

The Department of Anthropology in the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position in paleoanthropology beginning fall semester 2026. We seek scholars at the forefront of biological anthropology who apply scientific approaches, broadly conceived, to address anthropological questions related to the evolution and variation of humans and/or hominin ancestors. Potential research areas include the hominin fossil record and skeletal anatomy, biomechanics and functional morphology, or evolutionary approaches to human adaptations. The appointment is 100% time over the nine-month academic year (late August to late May) and will be made at the rank of tenure-track Assistant Professor, depending on qualifications and experience, in accordance with collegiate and University policy.

Faculty in the Department of Anthropology are expected to maintain an active program of scholarly research or creative activity, including publications; teach undergraduate and graduate courses; advise students; seek extramural funding; and contribute appropriate service to the department, college, university, and profession. The successful candidate will teach two courses per semester, including participation in the teaching rotation for a large introductory course in biological anthropology, and will develop undergraduate and graduate courses in their area of expertise. We are particularly interested in candidates whose work enhances diversity in the department, complements and extends existing expertise in biological anthropology, and engages with the four fields of anthropology.

State law requires a good faith estimate of the salary range for all advertised positions. The range for this position is $75,000 to $150,000, depending on discipline, experience, and other considerations. Faculty positions include significant start-up funds, as well as retirement, health, and other benefits.

Qualifications

  • Required: Ph.D. in anthropology or a closely related field in hand at the time of appointment.
  • Preferred: Evidence of research, including postdoctoral or equivalent experience, in biological anthropology, specifically in paleoanthropology, functional anatomy, or related areas.

Candidates will be evaluated on the quality of their academic preparation, the strength and relevance of their research to departmental priorities and the field, evidence of teaching commitment and skill, and the quality of recommendations. The successful applicant will contribute at all levels of the undergraduate and graduate programs.
