The Pinilla del Valle Site
The upper reaches of the Lozoya Valley, close to the village of Pinilla del Valle, some 100 kms north from Madrid, are home to a number of prehistoric sites of special scientific interest. They contain the remains of Neanderthals (Homo neanderthalensis), hominids more ancient than our own species. This makes them members of a small club of sites within Europe that contain palaeoanthropological remains. They also contain fossil associations of vertebrates from the Upper Pleistocene more complete than those of any other site in the Iberian Peninsula. Along with other palaeobotanical and geomorphological information, the findings at these sites are allowing us to reconstruct the past climates and landscapes of the region.
The first site to be found, the Camino Cave, was discovered in 1979 by palaeontologists from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. Excavations began in the 1980s under the supervision of Prof. F. Alférez. After a break during the 1990s, work was resumed in 2002 by an interdisciplinary group of researchers - archaeologists, palaeontologists, geologists, biologists and restorers - coordinated by the Museo Arqueológico Regional de la Comunidad de Madrid, and soon extended to cover the entire area of the upper Lozoya River valley.
This led to other sites being found at Calvero de la Higuera: Navalmaíllo Rock Shelter, Buena Pinta Cave, and Des-Cubierta Cave sites. The last of these was only discovered in 2009. There is, however, evidence that other fossil-bearing cavities exist in this same karst system.
The interest that arose in these sites led to the area of "Los Calveros" being declared an Area of Special Cultural Interest by the Madrid Regional Government in 2005.

Excursion Schedule
Coach departure is from the Museo Arquelógico Regional. We will leave the buses in Pinilla del Valle. From there, we will take the path towards the sites; this runs around the edge of the Pinilla Reservoir. The distance there and back is about 4 km. On the way we will be able to see waterfowl characteristic of flooded areas; with a little luck we might see a protected or threatened species such as the black stork. The visit is a low difficulty activity. You should wear comfortable footwear (boots or sports shoes). We recommend you bring binoculars. As it is still relatively warm at this time of year, we recommend you bring sunscreen, hats and sunglasses etc. There are no toilets available.
Expected arrival in Alcalá de Henares is 17:30 but there may be delays due to heavy traffic, so please do not rely on this arrival time for onward travel.

The 2016 conference will be held at the Museo Arquelógico Regional in Alcalá de Henares, Spain. The Museum is located in the former convent de la Madre de Dios, founded in 1624. In its long history, the building was used as a convent, a barracks, a prison and a government office, until finally being restored and converted into an archaeological museum, which opened in 1999. The museum is located in the centre of the historical city of Alcalá de Henares, and is host to important archaeological finds from the Comunidad de Madrid.

Alcalá de Henares (Madrid)
There are no direct trains from Madrid Barajas Airport to Alcalá de Henares, however it is possible to take the train from terminal T4 towards Principe Pio, and change at Atocha to line C-7, or C-2, in the direction of Alcalá de Henares, or Guadalajara. This option takes around 1-1 1/4 hours, and costs 3,25€
The bus is probably the most direct and cheap option to get from the airport to Alcalá de Henares. Bus no. 824 leaves from terminals T1, T2 and T3, and travels directly to Alcalá de Henares. It takes approximately 45 minutes and tickets can be bought on board for 3,60€.
Taxis are a very convenient way to get straight to your hotel door in Alcalá de Henares. Generally a taxi takes 25-35 minutes, and costs around 30-45€.
